From the consistently excellent Alentejo wine region, the Dom Rafael Red is smooth, complex and nicely balanced. Mild dark chocolate flavours with spicy peppermint undertones, and a touch of oak richness from limited ageing in new and used barrels. It is very versatile and can accompany a wide range of dishes. Certainly worth a try!

Mouchão is the most historic estate in the Alentejo, a region with a deserved reputation for producing consistently excellent wines. Still family owned, Mouchão has been making wine for more than a century and maintains the traditions established in 1901 when the winery was built – an elegant whitewashed adobe building, nestling in a valley and shaded by tall eucalyptus trees.

Mouchão wines are renowned for their longevity, maturing subtly as they age. Responsible husbandry and care in the vineyard is critical to harvesting the best fruit – and sustaining the estate’s healthy bee population. This wine is a blend of local varietals – Aragonez, Trincadeira, Castelao and Alciante Bouschet – from a variety of vineyards, all with vines at least 20 years old. It is aged in Portuguese and French oak barrels for 12 months, after which is then aged for at least 6 months in bottle.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY

“Mouchão’s entry-level wine. Plenty of dark fruit, with the oak not really showing and allowing the fruit to be the focus. Just a little bit of spice. Honest, chewy texture. There’s some firm tannins here but with the spicy sweet dark character of Alicante. Plenty of southern sunshine but no unwanted sweetness, and finishes nicely dry. Straightforward and balanced and should age a few more years at least even though it’s not an expensive wine.” (2015 vintage) 16 points
