Alain Paret, Syrah, Valvigneyre, Northern Rhone, France
This wonderful winery was established in 1972 by Alain Paret, with his son Anthony, now responsible for it and who is a very accomplished winemaker. The Valvigneyre is unusual for a Côtes du Rhône in that it is 100% Syrah and grown in the Northern Rhone. "Valvigneyre is produced on the 'Haut de Plateau' vineyards of Limony in the Northern Rhone Valley, at 500 to 800 feet altitude. 100% Syrah vines (30 years old) grow on several of Alain's finest hillsides in the 20-acre Domaine. The result is an aromatic, finely textured wine with remarkable finesse. Rounded and supple, it reveals aromas of bright red and black fruit mingling with floral notes and a touch of pepper, and smoothly integrated tannins.
