De Kleine Wijn Koop, 'Eekhoring Rooi', Cinsault Blend, Costal Region, South Africa
De Kleine Wijn Koop (the little wine co-op) is a few chaps making superb wines with cool labels, calling in winemaker friends to make each cuvee. Everything is now in the talented hands of winemaker Wynand Grobler, wines have always been made with minimal intervention, utmost freshness and most importantly are a massively pleasurable to drink – but production is small so there’s never been much to go around. Eeekhoring is Afrikaans for "squirrel", and this is a blend of Cinsault, Syrah and Pinotage mostly from the Swartland plus a little bit from Voor-Paardeberg, made in a light-to-medium bodied style. It had a very light press, giving it just enough 'grip', but not too much. Think of it like a soft, flavourful minute steak just lightly seared, with a few good cracks of black pepper.
